Install ESET on 50 or 1,000 devices without going one by one

When a company has more than a handful of computers, installing the antivirus device by device is no longer an option. ESET solves this with a free tool, ESET Remote Deployment Tool, which installs the agent and ESET protection on all network devices from a single computer.

This is the tool we use for large deployments: with it, we have deployed ESET in a company with 1,000 devices. In this guide, we show you the screens and what each one will ask for.

What you need before starting

  • A Windows computer on the same network as the target devices, from which to run the tool.
  • The ESET installer generated in the ESET PROTECT console, matching the platform of the target devices (64-bit, 32-bit, or ARM).
  • An account with administrator permissions on the destination devices. In a domain network, use the Active Directory administrator account.

Step 1: Where do the devices come from?

The first screen asks how you want to specify the devices where the installation will take place. There are four options:

ESET Remote Deployment Tool: choose devices from Active Directory, the network, or a list

  • Active Directory: reads them from the company’s Active Directory. This is the most convenient option if you have a domain.
  • Scan network: searches for them by scanning the network.
  • Import list: loads them from a file.
  • Add computers manually: you enter them manually.

Step 2: Selecting the devices

From Active Directory

It asks for the Active Directory server and its port (if left blank, it uses system defaults) and a user and password with permissions, or you can check the option to use the credentials of the currently logged-in user. Then it displays the domain devices so you can select the ones you want.

From this same screen, you can export the device list for ESET PROTECT.

Scanning the network

If there is no domain, specify the IP address ranges of your network and how to search (by ping or by ports), then click «Start scan». The found devices appear in the list for you to select.

Using a device list

Use a text file with one device name or IP address per line, or the list exported from the administration console.

Entering them manually

For a few devices, or to repeat the installation on those that failed: one name or IP address per line.

Verify the selection

Regardless of the method chosen, before proceeding, the tool shows you the list of devices where it will install. An important warning on this screen: if you use the console installed on your own server, the devices must be on the same platform (64-bit or 32-bit) as the selected installer, or the installation will fail.

Step 3: Configuration

With the chosen devices, the tool asks for three things:

ESET Remote Deployment Tool: installation package, ESET AV Remover, and administrator credentials

  • The installation package («Deployment package»): the installer you generated in the ESET console. It must match the platform of the target devices (64-bit, 32-bit, or ARM).
  • Administrator credentials: those of a domain administrator (all devices must be in the same domain) or a local administrator. With a local administrator, you must disable Remote Registry access on the devices beforehand, or the installation will fail.
  • The deployment method: the tool’s built-in method («Built-in») or PsExec.

There is a checkbox we recommend keeping checked if you are coming from another antivirus: «Use ESET AV Remover». With this option, the installation automatically removes any previous antivirus on each device without needing to uninstall it manually one by one. Nevertheless, whenever possible, we recommend uninstalling the previous antivirus using its manufacturer’s own uninstallation tool first.

Step 4: Deployment

The installation starts on all devices simultaneously, and the tool displays the result for each one. Devices that were off or did not respond can be retried later. As soon as a device finishes, it appears in the ESET PROTECT console and is managed from there.
